My wife is 4 months pregnant and has to take care of what she eats. In general is the food in Japan "safe" to eat for someone who is pregnant?

Japan has a population of roughly 128 million people. Do you think it was unsafe for the mothers of all those people born in Japan to eat the food there?
Of course people can go into detail about what you should or shouldn't eat, there's no hard scientific study, but if we were talking about food in general then yes its safe.
