re-entry permit necessary in my case? 2007/10/3 17:45
I am pretty sure about this one, but just wanted to ask anyways.

I am leaving Japan to move back home. I will still have 2 years left on my visa. In those 2 years, I am quite sure I will come back to Japan to visit, but for no more than perhaps a month. Is it necessary for me to get a re-entry permit?

Jeff,

If you want to return to Japan under the conditions of your current visa, then you should get a re-entry permit. If you don't, then your visa will become void on leaving Japan, and you will have to re-enter Japan on a Temporary Visitor visa (i.e. Tourist Visa) if you decide to visit Japan again in the future. Note that a re-entry permit costs 3,000 yen for a single, and 6,000 yen (I think) for a multiple permit, so you need to decide whether you really need to use your current visa again in the future.
