Nova viability 2007/10/3 19:05
My son has just arrived in Japan to teach with Nova. Had email saying great uncertainty locally as to whether Nova will cease business, is this true? If so what will he do ?

check the Japan times newspaper (in english) at www.japantimes.co.jp/
when the newspaper page opens type Nova in the window on the top left just to the right of "google"

Nova itself is experiencing lots of problems, from financial meltdown, downsizing staffs and fleeing customers and more. Your son will have to need lots of luck to survive.

Nova = no good 2007/10/4 12:36
Your son should be looking at other options right now if he isn't already. Some of the managers and Japanese staff have still not received their September pay check (for August's work) and it will be a miracle if everyone gets paid in October.

Nova teachers are being evicted from their apartments because Nova has deducted the rent from their salary but then not paid the landlords, people are quitting left right and centre and irate students are demanding, but not getting, their money back.

Employment options in Japan will be tight if/ when Nova goes down with all the unemployed teachers around. If he doesn't find something in Japan soon he could start looking at Korea or Taiwan perhaps.

Does he have plenty of funds in case he never sees a paycheck from Nova?

Recruitment in Australia has shut down. 2007/10/4 15:24
Apparently the recruitment agency in Australia has closed down because they haven't been paid.

If he just left, I am very suprised that he wasn't warned about the precarious situation.

If you want to get really cynical and depressed over it, go read the forums at http://www.letsjapan.org/
