I will be using the 7 day JR pass for travel in Japan. I intend to activate it for use 4 to 10 November 2007.
However, I intend to travel on overnight trains.
If start a journey on the "nobi nobi" seat of Sunrise Seto
Depart: Tokyo on 3 November 2007 at 2200 hrs Arrive: Takamatsu on 4 November at 0726 hrs
Will the JR pass cover the cost of travel from 0001 hrs to 0726 hrs on 4 November 2007? How much do I have to pay for this journey if I have the JR pass valid from 4 to 10 November?
Thank you so much if you could help.

the pass will cover whatever trip you to on the 4th however it is unlikely that JR will allow you to pay only whatever km you will be traveling between 22:00 and midnight. unless there is a a station where the train stops at around midnight or just a bit later and you buy a ticket for that destination. If I were you I would start my pass on the 3rd.

It might cost you a bit below 6000yen travelling from tokyo to Shizuoka as the sunrise seto will stop by shizuoka after midnight.

I had a three week holiday in Japan this summer. I activated my JR pass on arrival to start 8 days later and attempted to book nobi nobi seats for 3 weeks later, they were already fully booked and we had to get the Ginga train and pay for the bed part.
