To move and work in Japan...

I have a question. I am a Japanese-American (nissei) with American citizenship, however, I have gone in touch with my roots, and I would like to live, work, and die in Japan. I love music, and would like to do that, however, I have no degree to speak of, only a diploma. I know that many people in Japan and America have dropped out of high school to pursue their love of music. But that's not my question. my question is, if I were to become labeled (highly unlikely, but still possible) while on a 90-day tourist visa, would I be able to get a work visa if they were willing to sponser me?
Also, outside of being a musician, could I live in Japan if I had enough money to support myself? My brother does online-marketing and he wants to know if he could live in Japan for up to 5 years via self-employed online work. Is there a visa for that?

Andrew,

Yes, from an Immigration standpoint, that is quite possible. If you think you are talented enough to get signed up by a music label in Japan, then you should do it before you move to Japan.
Also, outside of being a musician, could I live in Japan if I had enough money to support myself?
Unless you have a Japanese spouse, you will need a work visa to stay in Japan more than 90 days, but without a university degree, the chances of getting a work visa are highly remote.

No. You need to be employed by someone who will sponsor you for a work visa.

if you are nisei (日系二世)and have proof that you are descendant of former Japanese then you can obtain long term resident visa. this visa is good for 3yrs and allows you to work. you can extend the visa. after 10yrs of living in japan, you may apply for permanent visa then after another 10yrs you may naturalize to japanese.

longterm resident visa is called Teijusha visa (定住者ビサ)and to apply it you need your grand parents' family register (koseki touhon) and your parents marrige registration, yours and your parents birth certificate, gurantor, proof of your non criminal record. if you have relative then ask them to become your sponser. if your papers are writen in english then go to japanese embasy to translate them for you.
and hopefully you will get your visa. to become a musician, you can consider it after you enter japan and research about your brother's marketing business.
good luck!
