Hi,
I have currently just been studying in Japan but just returned,
My friends and I have already planned that we are going to Japan from november- jan 08-09.
we have kind of planned,.
osaka
kyoto
kobe
nara
nagoya
tokyo
nagano
kanazawa
nagoya
Our main places of stay is in nagoya, for we have friends and i used to live there,
I would like to advice on where to go, what to see etc
And any really really cheap hostels or backpackers or hotels.
We would like to spend only about 1500-3000 yen per night each.
Dont really care what the condition is like considering we are going for graduation travel and going cheap!

If you are considering using the JR pass for the trip, you can use the night train(sunrise seto or izumo)between Tokyo and Osaka for free. As you said you don't mind the condition, you might like it.
