Onsen near Osaka around New Years

I will be in Osaka on Jan 1st and 2nd and would like to go to a great onsen/ryokan not too far away. Any suggestions? Also will they be open at that time? Do I /can I make reservations?

But it might be too late to reserve hotel or ryokan on January (New Year holidays).

While they can be pleasant enough, I don't know that either Arima or Minoo qualify as great, compsred to other Japanese onsen in Nagano or Kyushu, for example. The Kansai region is not a prime onsen zone, alas.

You might want to consider staying at a high end Kyoto ryokan for 1 or 2 nights. Only an hour away from Osaka. Or Nara.
