this will be my first time solo backpacking Japan for a month during DEC. Planning my itinerary at the moment, 1 week tokyo, 1 week hokkaido, hopefully something interesting in between. Am thinking whether a 21 days JR pass will help to cut costs on my travelling? I am pretty much a slow paced guy, and will loved to spend more time enjoying Japan slowly. Any advices will be apprenciated, thank you!

It depends on your itinerary. Tokyo and Hokkaido alone only justifies a 21-day pass if you use trains to travel between Tokyo and Hokkaido both ways.
