reserving seats on trains 2007/11/22 16:04
We are traveling by train on 1st January from Niseko, Hokkaido to Kyoto. As it is a busy time of year, and a long trip, we want to reserve ahead. Is it possible to reserve seats from Australia, or do we need to wait to we enter Japan and validate our rail pass?. Thanks.

It is currently not possible to make seat reservations from outside of Japan. But January 1st is generally not a particularly busy day in terms of train travel.

..once you do activate your rail pass though, you can make reservations for the rest of your trip in one go.

If you use the Hyperdia timetable (google it, or look for the link from the Train page of this excellent site), you can get timetables and train numbers so, armed with those, you can make all your reservations in one go, which at least might give you some peace of mind.
