DIY holiday in tokyo 2007/11/23 01:55
How easy or how difficult is it to go to Tokyo on our own? Is English better used now? I am travelling with a 8 y.o. kid. Is it advisable to find our way to Mt Fuji? Is it safe to stay at a budget hostel?

How easy or how difficult is it to go to Tokyo on our own?

It can be very easy, especially if you make a lot of advance research using guide books and this very website:

Is English better used now?

It is easy to get around Tokyo without Japanese language knowledge, especially if you have a flexible, adverterous personality and attitude.

Is it advisable to find our way to Mt Fuji?

Again, it can be done if you prepare appropriatly:

Alternatively, you could opt for a guided one-day bus tour:

Is it safe to stay at a budget hostel?

Yes. Japan in general is a safe country.

english 2007/11/23 12:34
I have visited Japan many times without any problems and would go back tomorrow if I COULD and I only speak 50 words of Japanese (but can' t really make a sentence) . Englis signs are always there when you need them. once I was kind of lost (in Japan as in Europe side streets don't always go in an obvious direction. A lady and I communicated with a few words in English, Japanese and French, and lots of hands gesture,s and I did find my way back.

What to do on rainy days 2007/11/24 11:32

Rainy Days 2007/11/24 11:46
Rainy days are going to be cold in December but in Shinjuku and the surrounding area there will lots to do. If you want shopping then you are right in the thick of it between Shinjuku and Shibuya... sight seeing might be a bit harder in the rain. You could get to Ueno fairly easily and visit the museums or the zoo on a rainy day, although the zoo is mostly outdoors.
