Stay in Hakone.

I've got a flight into Tokyo in March, but I'll only be there five days. I was thinking of hiring a car and driving to Hakone, staying there and touring (Tokyo's too big!).
As a non-Japanese speaker would that be easy to set up without getting lost? Is it safe?
Any suggestions about what to do and where to stay?
Thank you in advance.

For a newcomer to Japan, I think it is easier to visit Hakone by public transportation, especially if you are not used to left side driving. But a rental car is not a bad idea either. However, if you rent a car, I recommend to take trains to close to Hakone (e.g. Odawara) and pick up the car there to avoid driving in and through Tokyo. Also, especially if you rent a car (but also if you go there by public transport), I recommend to avoid weekends and go during the week.
