Winter trip in Nikko, or Hakone?

Hi,
I am planing to go to Tokyo with some friends and stop by either Nikko or Hakone for at least 1 night. I can't find much information about what to do in winter besides osen in both of the location. It would be very appreciated if someone who has been to either location in winter and give us some advises. We like nature but not too much hard-cord moutain climbing. Ideally we want to have easy walk for sight seeing and local store shopping.
