Cost of the14 day JR Pass is higher than single tickets, but if you are able to make the long distance travel within 7 days than the 7 JR Pass will let you save on train costs.

i will be joining my friends in japan for this trip. if we are able to squeeze everything in 7 days, should i buy JR pass, but my friends cant use JR pass?how should we go about it?

You could take highway buses instead (some overnight). It will probably come cheaper than a rail pass.
Otherwise, note that regular train tickets will not be considerably more expensive than the Japan Rail Pass.
