Snow in January-skiing or ice-skating

I'd like to see snow as i never have before, which means i can't ski or anything. Is there any reasonably-priced resort that offers lessons for beginners? I probably won't ski ever again, but for a day i'd like to ski or snowboard..
I'd love to go ice-skating (im good at that), are there any places i can do that? I have one weekend free, and would like to leave Tokyo where i'll be staying for 2 weeks, and go SEE SOME SNOW! But i'd get bored just doing nothing so i'd like to ice-skate or ski or something? Any advice? Cheers

Natalie,
There is supposed to be a temporary ice-skating rink set up again this year in front of the Old Red-brick Warehouses in the Minatomirai district of Yokohama. I haven't been there this year, but it runs until about February, and is atmospheric at night with multicoloured LEDs on everyone's skates.

The ice-skating rink is there at the Red Brick Warehouse, Yokohama right now. My daughter went skating there last Saturday. (15th December)
