8 day trip to Japan

I'm planning a first time trip to Japan from March 21-30, 2008. I would like to see Tokyo and Kyoto, but I'm open to other suggestions. It would be just me and my boyfriend and we would only like to sight see and go shopping. We don't care much about activities. Where would be the best place/city to stay and could someone make a itinerary for me. Thank you!

I suggest to spend 4 days each in Tokyo and Kyoto.

Drop Tokyo and add Osaka and Hiroshima if you are more interested in history.
Drop Nara and Himeji and add Osaka if you are more interested in modern attractions.
