Travel to Kyoto from Tokyo on 1st Jan?

We arrive from Australia on 1st Jan and need to travel to Kyoto. Planning to go by shinkansen but can't buy tickets ahead of time? What advice? Have hotel booked in Kyoto. Thanks!

Jan 1st is not a busy day for shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto. You can show up JR counter at the airport and book your seats.
