view of Mt. Fuji 2008/1/6 20:31
Where is a good place in the Tokyo area for viewing Mt. Fuji? I have heard on a clear day it can be seen from tall buildings, but I want to get closer than downtown Tokyo without actually going all the way to the Five Lakes area.

From this website:
"The easiest way to view Mount Fuji is from the train on a trip along the Tokaido Line between Tokyo and Osaka. If you take the shinkansen from Tokyo in direction of Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka, the best view of Mount Fuji can be enjoyed from around Shin-Fuji Station on the right hand side of the train, about 40 to 45 minutes after leaving Tokyo."

Can you get to this same area any other way? Thanks for the input.

I only came up with the shinkansen. I'm guessing you mean Shizuoka for Shin Fuji and you're in Tokyo right now. However, if you go to Odawara or even Hayama/Kamakura, you can get a good view of Fujisan.

The above seems realistic. Supposedly, the best view of Fuji in that area is from Miho no Matsubara near Shimizu. I imagine that to get to that location, one would have to get off at Shizuoka and reach Miho via bus or taxi. Needless to say you'd have to be fortunate in your timing as there are many days that Fuji isn't visible at all!

Tay is right. There can be a beautiful view of Fuji from the end of Enoshima beach (near Kamakura) when it is clear enough, but very often it is not visible at all due to clouds or haze. You have the best chance of seeing it in winter, particularly in the morning and evening.

If you are going towards Nagoya/ Osaka then the shinkansen (right side) is a great place to see it from, but if you are not planning a trip southwest then taking the bullet train just to see Mt. Fuji sounds like a waste- you would be better off going to Five Lakes or Hakone.

Note that Fuji is not visible from Odawara itself, there is a mountain range in the way. Just before you arrive at Odawara station you can see it though.

Where can I find this view? It seems to be a popular place to see Mount Fuji. I know it's in Shizuoka Prefecture, but I'm not sure of the location and how to get there.

Another one I found interesting was this one taken in Izu.

Did a little research, the first one is in Shimizu, Shizuoka. It takes about 90 minutes to reach from Tokyo. Take a shinkansen to Shizuoka, then take a limited train headed for Shimizu.

Here's a map: http://www.mapfan.com/m.cgi?MAP=E138.29.31.245N35.1.12.88

I believe the second one is in is pronounced Nishiura, but it's not a station in Izu.

Shimizu 2008/1/8 04:13
The location in Shimizu is called “ú–{•½, Nihondaira. I don't know how to get there, maybe a bus?

This one was also taken in Shimizu: http://www.fujigoko.tv/live/constnInfo.cgi?Code=1196160227

Any cheap hotels to stay in Shimizu? Maybe near the station.

In fact the first photo is from the plateau of Nihondaira, which is above Shimizu. Miho no Matsubara (the black sand beach of Miho, covered with old black pines) is in the immediate area. The famous inn the Minaguchi-ya used to be in the nearby town of Okitsu (see the book Japanese Inn by Oliver Statler), but I understand it has closed (a pity as it was a great place). There should be other places to stay in the Shimizu area.

thanks for the input, everyone. It seems that for the price of a shinkansen ticket to Shizuoka I would be better off heading for the five lakes. I was hoping to avoid traveling too far from central Tokyo as my friends only have a week here and just want to look at Fujisan, not climb it, but it seems that even getting a good look at it is farther from Tokyo than I estimated. We will figure something out, or I will buy them a nice picture book. thanks again for the help.

Lauren,

Also, don't assume that you will be able to see Mount Fuji clearly even by travelling to Shizuoka. It is often shrouded in cloud, so you could easily waste a lot of time and money going there only to find that you can't see anything. Personally I would enjoy the view from one of the tall buildings in Tokyo - preferably early in the morning or just before sunset.

Mount Fuji 2008/1/8 15:28
Mount Fuji is best seen very early in the morning around 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Then again in the afternoon around 4 p.m.

Here is the weather for Kawaguchiko: http://www.tenki.jp/pyoh/p19430049251.html

If you can stay in a hotel in Kawaguchiko, wake up early in the morning and see it from the lake.

Here's a hotel: http://kshouse.jp/fuji-e/facilities/index.html

A bus ticket to Kawaguchiko Station is 1700 yen from Shinjuku's Keio Bus Terminal. It must be purchased before boarding the bus. I think the bus stop was 26, to purchase a ticket go north from bus stop 26.

I would like to see Mount Fuji from Izu on the western coast but I'm not sure of a location. Any information about where to see Mount Fuji?

This picture was taken in Nishiura.
