We would like to visit Mt Tokachidake this year. When is the best season & how do we go there. If we travel by JR, which is the nearest station?

The Tokachidake I know is in Daisetsuzan NP, Hokkaido. It's famous for cross country skiing in winter. If you just want to climb it it takes about 7 hours to get up and down in summer.
The closest train station is probably Furano.

Is there any more information about Mt Tokachidake & it's surrounding. Climbing up & down for 7 hours is not our cup of tea as we have old & young family members traveling with us. Is there any other activity that suitable for whole family.
We saw the post cards of Mt Tokachidake, it is beautiful & we do not want to miss it from our travel plan.
