The Yamanote Line is in Tokyo! The Japan Rail Pass can be used on JR trains nationwide:

Osaka has a JR loop line that goes around many of the places you are likely to want to visit. others places are a subway ride away.
in Kyoto buses are the way to go and a day pass isn't expensive

Recommend place in Kyoto 2008/2/6 20:52
I would like to recommend the places in Kyoto.

1) Kinkakuji (Gold Pavilion)
2) Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion)
3) Kiyomizudera

I went there last year...quite nice.

Also you can buy Kyoto sightseeing card at Kyoto Station. 1 day around 1,200 Yen - Can use all buses & subway.

If you buy 1 day subway, it costs 600 Yen....but you also need to take the bus on some place. Subway alone is not enough. The bus fare per 1 ride = 220 Yen
