My wife & I (early 60's) will be making our second visit to Japan for 12 days in November. We want to see Kamakura & the Hakone area & were wondering what was the best option: to visit both from Tokyo, including the Hakone/Mt Fuji day-trip with a tour group, or stay for a few nights in the Hakone area & visit Kamakura from there. We will have SUICA cards & Japan Rail passes during our stay in Japan. Any advice would be appreciated, please.

I recommend to visit Hakone and Kamakura on separate side trips from Tokyo. Kamakura is not rally conveniently accessed from Hakone.
Note also that a Japan Rail Pass will only pay off ifyou make some major journeys beside the minor journeys around Tokyo (Hakone, Kamakura).

Thanks Uji. We're planning not to activate our JR passes until we leave Tokyo (& surrounds) for Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima (& a few other places yet to be determined)
