Green carriages on Hikari trains? 2008/2/10 20:38
We'll be traveling from Tokyo to Hiroshima on the Shinkansen and were wondering if there are always Green carriages available on that route?

We'll be using a JR Rail pass, so only able to use Hikari / Kodama trains.

Hikari Railstar trains between Shin-Osaka and Hakata are the only shinkansen trains that do not carry green cars. For Japan Rail Pass holders, there is no fast alternative to the Hikari Railstar between Okayama and Hakata. But the reserved seats in the ordinary class feel like green cars.

The upper left and upper right images are the inside of the ordinary class reservation seat compartment, while the upper middle one is inside the non-reserved compartment on Hikari Railstar which runs between Shin-Osaka and Hakata, that doesn't contain green cars.

Configuration in Hikari Railstar:
ordinary class reserved seat section; 2-2
ordinary class non-reserved seat section; 2-3

This was taken in the green car compartment on Hikari, which runs between Tokyo and Okayama. 2-2 configuration.
On the other hand, in ordinary class seat compartment, regardless of whether it's reserved or not, the seat configuration is 2-3. Like the non-reserved seat compartment on Hikari Railstar.
