Opening time of Ueno and Tokyo Stations. 2008/2/11 16:55
Hi guys, my flight departs narita at 0945 on a sunday. My hotel Sutton Place Hotel(7-8-23,UENO), is 1 min walk from Ueno JR Station. I need to catch the 06.30 KEX from Tokyo Station.
1. What time shall I leave the hotel to take the Metro to Kyoto Station?
2. What time do both the Tokyo and Ueno Stations open?
3. What time does the underground start running?
4. What are the JR lines aside from Yamanote that I can catch from Ueno to Tokyo Station?
5. Is it safe at that ungodly hour for a single girl with a trolley bag?
6. If I arrive before the Ueno Station opens where is best for me to wait?
7. I have the JR Pass so I'd prefer to catch KEX. JR Pass is valid on it, right?
Getting pretty nervous just thinking about walking alone at that time... If it is not recommended then I may have to stay the final night in Narita. Hopefully the Narita hotel's free shuttle starts early...

I assume you mean NEX. Did you considered to take a Keisei train from Ueno directly to the airport or do you choose the indirect route because you have a Japan Rail Pass?

What time shall I leave the hotel to take the Metro to Kyoto Station?

I assume you mean Tokyo Station. You should take the JR Yamanote or Keihin-Tohoku Line to Tokyo Station rather than the metro. If your NEX departs at 6:30, I recommend to catch a train from Ueno around 6:00.

What time do both the Tokyo and Ueno Stations open?

Around 4:30, when the trains start running, I believe.

What time does the underground start running?

Around 5am.

What are the JR lines aside from Yamanote that I can catch from Ueno to Tokyo Station?

Keihin-Tohoku Line

Is it safe at that ungodly hour for a single girl with a trolley bag?

Yes.

If I arrive before the Ueno Station opens where is best for me to wait?

It won't be closed.

I have the JR Pass so I'd prefer to catch KEX. JR Pass is valid on it, right?

Yes. But it is called NEX (Narita Express).

Oh God... Sorry Uji! I am exhausted from staying up till 5am and getting up at 9am doing the research for this trip!!! Anyway, good to hear that it is safe for single ladies to be walking about at 5ish. Ya, I plan to take the NEX as I already have the JR Pass. But I ask you one more question.. what would it be like around Ueno Station at that time? Totally dead or already filling up? But you reckon I won't need to do something drastic like changing my last night stay to Narita, ya?

It'll be pretty much dead at 6 am on a Sunday, but as Uji said, it's totally safe.

Make sure to book your seat in advance on the first NEX leaving at 6:30 am. This one gets booked up occasionally. I recommend reserving your seat in a few days in advance.

Keisei Line the best option 2008/2/12 13:38
If I were you, I will take the easy and direct way. I will spend Yen 1000 for the Keisei Express train which goes directly from Ueno station to Narita. Although it is not as comfortable as NEX, but on Sunday morning, you can surely have enough room to relax or take a nap on the way. Just make sure you get off at the right terminal station. In big stations like the Tokyo station, you may have to spend extra time in finding the right gate for NEX. It's no fun when you are in a hurry with your luggage.

thanks for the feedback. I will consider both the NEX and the Keisae Express when the time comes. Re reservation for the NEX. What happens if it is full? Not allowed on at all or can board but not seat?

Narita Express 2008/2/12 20:40
When all seats on a specific Narita Express are sold, then tickets for standing at a Yen 510 reduction are sold.

I am planning to buy the NEX Suica (3500). So what happens if NEX is fully booked and so I buy the standing at the disc? WIll the disc be applicable for the NEX Suica package as well?

from or to Narita Airport 2008/2/13 00:19
Mel,
in your first post you mentioned to go From Tokyo To Narita AP by JR Rail Pass. The N'ex Suica special offer is only available From Narita AP To Tokyo and you waste money when you have a valid JR Pass for this day. With the JR Rail Pass you have the right for a free reservation, but if no seat reservation is issued there is no refund on the JR Rail Pass.

Hi Peter. I will be in Japan for the duration of 12 days (arriving at 8.15pm of 26/3 and departing 7.45am of 6/4). Staying in Tokyo till the morning of the 31/3. So I only intend to start utilizing my JR Pass on 31/3, which will cover my trip from Tokyo - Osaka - Nara - Kinosaki Onsen - Kyoto - Tokyo and then to Narita AP on the 6/4. Altogether 7 days. That's why I need to travel from narita AP to Tokyo on the 26/3 without utilizing the JR Pass. Now if I buy the Suica & NEX Package, I'll need to reserve the seat of the NEX at purchase point. Is there any additional charges for doing the reservation? (I recall that with JP Pass seat reservation is free, so now I got thinking.. does that mean seat reservation of the NEX is chargable if you purchase the Suica & NEX package??

The seat reservation is included as part of the Suica and NEX package.

-The NEX rarely sells out.

-The seat reservation is included as part of the package.

-I doubt in the case of a full reservations out they would even sell the Suica & Nex package. There would be really real advantage, otherwise take the Keisei Line or the JR Rapid where you can aim for a seat.

But again the NEX rarely sells out.

recommend Keisei 2008/2/13 12:57
If I were you, I will use Keisei it cost only 1000 yen no need to reserve the seat but if you worry, Keisei skyliner also worth cost 1920 yen . I recommend this because your hotel is just at Ueno.

I also recommed the keisei line if you are not very much familiar with TOKYO station. The NEX platform is a long walk from the Yamanote line platform, assuming you might take the JR Yamanote from Ueno to Tokyo as you have a JR Pass. Please prepare enough time to find the platform and the long walk. I am telling you from my experience.

Hi Lester, if I catch the 6.30 NEX I intend to even leave my hotel (1min walk from Ueno Station) at 05.30! I think that will give me more than enough time.. Otherwise I will just stay the final night in a Narita hotel with shuttle to the airport.

Mel,

Sounds like you will have enough time from Ueno to NEX. But still, you ought to move fast from platform to platform and hope you don't have lots of luggage. And on the safe side, do make a reservation for the 6:30 NEX.
