Is the 7 day pass worth it for me?

I will be in Japan for +- 10 days, flying into Osaka and out of Tokyo. Is it worth getting the rail pass or just getting tickets as I go.
I thought about getting the Kansai pass to cover 3 or 4 days around Kyoto and Nara and heading up to Tokyo either by overnight train or Shinkansen. When in Tokyo using the metro and a 2 day pass to Hakone and then of the the airport.
Any info or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
