We have a young Japanese girl shortly to be returning home having spent a year in the UK learning the language.Any ideas on a suitable gift from 2 middle aged men wishing her luck in the future.I thought of a illustrated book of the area where she has lived...any other thoughts ?

If by area you mean the whole country then that's definitely a good idea.
I got a book about Japan from my friends as a farewell gift, I think there's no better way in saying "look what you'll miss if you don't come here again". :)
