I would like to find a free or low cost map of Japan in English, especially one that covers the region that stretches from Narita through Nagano to Takayama.
Any leads appreciated.

You should try your nearest JNTO office (if there is one), as they provide free maps of Japan and the major city areas.

bic camera electrical stores have free maps of japan (if there are any left). Also lots of 100yen shops stock maps
