First time Japan: walks 2008/2/28 05:01
I'm going to Japan for the first time for 3 weeks in March/April. I enjoy walking so wouldn't mind fitting in afew days hikes or possibly 5-6 days . I assume the LP Walking in Japan will be a good starting point, but are there any particular recommendations?

cheers

There are beautiful walks and hikes all across Japan. The season is a big factor! Many places are not accessible during winter.

Any idea where in Japan you are heading?

Hokkaido gets the wildest with Daisetsuzan and Shiretoko National Parks:

Takaosan is a mountain closer to Tokyo:

One of my personal highlights of 2007 was hiking in the Kirishima National Park on Kyushu with beautiful volcanic landscapes.

I see now that you mentioned the season as March/April. I am afraid that is a little bit early for Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps. But the Tokyo area, and most of western and souther Japan should be okay.
