how to get tickets for the train

I am going to japan this April 10th seeing the family in Masawia. Need to know how to get train tickets. we are staying over night and then catch the train. do i need to get them before i leave or can i get them at the station. i have heard a lot of things so i am confused. will be picked up in Hachenhoe, if anyone knows how to help me let me know. never been there...
