Can anyone tell me anything about Jalways airline? I am not familiar with them. Am assuming they are an offshoot of Japan Airlines. Are they a low cost carrier? The flight I am looking at is on a 747-400 and goes for 8 1/2 hours - Narita/Brisbane.

Yes, Jalways is a low cost carrier which belongs to JAL group. What I often hear is (I've never used this carrier before) that Jalways is NOT really JAL in terms of service. But, looking at the timetable, Brisbane-Narita(JL761/762) route is operated by JAL. So you can expect the same service level of JAL!

That's not correct. It's simply a code share flight with Jalways. Jalways operates this flight, though JAL's aircraft with IFE is often used on this route. If in doubt, contact JAL. (0120)25-5931
Jalways seems to get mixed reviews. It's a low cost carrier, though they charge a fare comparable to other full service carriers.
From my personal experience, I'd say JAL doen't come up with SQ in terms of in-flight service. I've flown both carriers many times in the past, and I'm always impressed with flight attendants' attentiveness on SQ.

Spuds,
The planes and level of in-flight service are basically the same as for JAL, i.e. OK but nothing exceptional. The main difference is that the staff are mostly non-Japanese and often speak better English than the Japanese staff.

That's not correct. It's simply a code share flight with Jalways. At least as far as I see on the timetable, it says "Operated by JAL International for JALWAYS." So that's why I assumed this route (as popular route) is operated by JAL.
Anyhow, it has Personal TV/Magic-2 even for economy class.

wife and I have used Jalways many times between Fukuoka and Honolulu. considerable cheaper than jal if you buy tickets through a discount travel agent.flight crews are mostly American and cabin crew Thai. most passengers are Japanese tour groups. seats are very tight . most of the time I was the only foreigner on the flight, I always asked for and got a exit row seat because of my long legs. food bad ,other than that no complaints.

I contacted JAL again to inquire about this matter. After a long hold, the JAL rep has answered me that the flight JL/JO761, 762 are operated on the JAL metal, but the inflight service is given by Jalways.
I complained that their expressions on those particular flights were misleading and asked them to amend the remarks. Wrote down the agent's name so that the info should prove to be precise.
I've found another typo on JAL's website before. This is the second time.
Calling someone is sometimes required to seek truth. That's why I listed their contact #.
@OP,
I've read before that the JO's crew from Thailand etc have passed a very difficult entrance exam, therefore their service could be of high quality. I like Thai Airways' hospitality, though it's another outfit.

Its not uncommon for JAL to use JALways metal, and vice versa JAL flies JALways metal as well. Its a wholly owned subsidiary of JAL.
Any case unless you're flying business or first class, coach service is coach service. Nothing fancy.

Thank you to all those who responded and clarified matters for me. I think my preference will be to take a non-Jalway flight if possible so will have to see how I go.

Spuds, go with the Jalways flight. I just caught the Narita to Brisbane Jalways and it's fine. It was definatelt a JAL plane, it even had tv sceens in the back of the seats. I hink the only difference were a coupl eof the flight attendents were non_japanese asian. The JAL/JALways flight is a better option than the Qantas to Narita via Cairns.
