I'm looking at purchasing the JR Pass to travel within Japan. However, noticed there is also another pass for the Hakone Area. Can I use the JR Pass to travel to Hakone? Once in the Hakone area, do I need to buy the Hakone Free Pass?

You can use the JR Pass to travel as far as Odawara, which is the "entrance" to the Hakone area. After which you'll need to use non JR modes of transportation.

You might/might not need to get a Hakone Free Pass depending on where in Hakone you plan to travel:
