I am planning a trip to Japan in May and believe there is a service provided by Japan Rail where you can have your luggage forwarded on to the next city rather than having to carry it on the train with you. Where do you find out about this service?

This website has a wealth of information that is available simply by doing a search.
In your case, enter "Takuhaibin" above just before Search. Then click on Takuhaibin – Delivery Services. You can also do the search with "Luggage Delivery Service."
