I don't think there are direct buses outside the ski season, i.e. before December.

No, there is no direct train, but the train journey from Hakuba to Nagoya requires only one easy transfer of trains along the way in Matsumoto. It is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass.
are train timetables available for Oct now?
They are unlikely to change in any major ways, if at all.

No direct bus runs outside of the ski season. There are all the year round bus services between Matsumoto and Nagoya. There is a nationwide timetable revision on JR Lines on 15th March, this Saturday. JR companies are unlikely to change the new schedules by October. JR pass is valid all the way between Hakuba and Nagoya. This train search website has been updated based on the new timetable. http://www.jorudan.co.jp/english/
