Does ryokan with private bath exist? 2008/3/13 11:19
My fiance and I would love to experience a night in a traditional ryokan... but neither one of us want to bathe with other people. Are there any options for us?

(Kyoto, Nara, Hikone, Kobe... anywhere within an hour or so of Osaka)

Many ryokan have bath tubs on the room. But I guess you are looking for more than that, i.e. a hot spring bath on the room.

The following ryokan in Arima Onsen has private baths on some of its room:

Many ryokan also have baths that can be used on a private basis.

no, a western-style bath is fine 2008/3/13 22:26
Private use of a hot spring would be a great bonus, but we really would be fine with just a shower attached to the room.

Many . . . 2008/3/14 09:02
. . . ryokans priced $150-175 and up will usually have a full bathroom to include a shower. However few Japanese use them so often the pipes stutter when you open them or there are no towels or soap.

Senpokaku Ryokan in Toba had a tub outside on the balcony that you could fill up and bathe in. View was fantastic. No extra charge but it was a western room.

Hotel Sansui in Gero Onsen had a bathtub/shower but a clear glass window to enjoy the view.

However in both places I used the in-house hot spring.

Have you tried checking out your options at:

http://japaneseguesthouses.com/index.htm

I know a few I was planning to stay at that have baths and toilets in the room:

(Kyoto)

http://japaneseguesthouses.com/db/kyoto/gyozanen.htm
http://japaneseguesthouses.com/db/kyoto/shouenso.htm

There is one I'm hoping to stay at that has a private hot spring bath for a few rooms, but I'm not sure if westerners can book it since they didn't list it on the English site:

(the rooms I'm talking about)
http://www.seryo.co.jp/roten%20kyakushitu.html
(English Version of Site)
http://www.seryo.co.jp/english.htm
(Japanese Guest House)
http://japaneseguesthouses.com/db/kyoto/seryo.htm

Since I don't have a credit card I couldn't ask Japanese Guest House if those rooms are available to book. If your lucky to have one you can try asking them via reservation form.

I hope that helps you.

just in case...in Japan, in both private (at home, in a good ryokan, in a luxury hotel) and public "baths" one only soak in a tub after first washing outside the tub. The exception is a business hotel as the bathrooms are too small to also have a shower outside the bathtub. Some Japanese, in their home, soak in the tub first then wash outside and go back to the tub for a long soak while others (my in-laws) always wash outside the tub first. The whole idea is that no soap is ever brought in the tub. The tub temperature by the way, in shared public baths, is usually uncomfortably hot for many westerners. At my in-laws place even if am the last to soak in I still find the water too hot.
