Tokyo/Kyoto/Hakone Hotel for family of 5 2008/3/25 00:49
Hi there,

We are a family of 2 adults and 3 kids (10,7,5 years old) looking for recommendation of family accomodation (hotel/ryokan/etc).

We are planning to fly into Narita airport on Nov and will most likely stay in Tokyo, Hakone, near Disneyland and probably Kyoto.

Our budget is US$200 per nite, is it possible at all in Japan for a family of our size?

Thanks,
Ethan

We had trouble finding places that would take four. Five may be even harder. For where we stayed as four, in your same three cities, see: http://www.2think.org/japan-hotels.shtml

Lodging for family in Tokyo 2008/3/25 22:03
Do a web search for Tokyo Ryokan, many of them offer rooms for 5. We are going in June - family of 4 see my response to another poster http://www.japan-guide.com/forum/quereadisplay.html?0+47854

We are staying in Ueno, which is in central Tokyo, and you can take the train directly from Narita: http://www.keisei.co.jp/keisei/tetudou/keisei_us/top.html

Close to park, zoo, museum and easy transit all around the city.

Ikebukuro House in Tokyo 2008/3/26 01:30
5 of us(all adults) stayed at the House of Ikebukoro (Tokyo) in a family room for 4 ensuite. There was enough room for us. Room conditions are very clean and location is convenient.

Ryokan 2008/3/29 16:37
We are a family of 2 adults and 2 teenagers. We stayed at Homeikan ryokan near the university. It was inexpensive and a very Japanese experience. They can accommodate from one to school groups. Even splitting up into 2 rooms is still a cheap option. Check out http://www.japaneseguesthouses.com/db/tokyo/homeikan.htm
It is close to stations and very convenient to the city but feels like you are in a japanese neighbourhood. Also because of the university nearby there are plenty of cheap eats.

Ryokan is the way to go 2008/4/1 10:45
Our family of 4 just came back from Japan 2 wks ago.
Stayed at Ichinoyu Honkan in Hakone, it even has a private hot spring bath.Dinner plan is great.Plan A is adequate. For my family of 4(Kids13 and 12),we order 1 plan B and 2 plan A.Breakfast is buffet style, some English style food as well as Japanese food

In Kyoto, stayed at Ryokan Shimizu,Very clean and dainty. Close to Kyoto station.10 min. walk. When we first got there,we weren't sure where it was, so we took a taxi cost around 800yen.Taking Taxi in Kyoto was not too expensive especially ahen you have 5 of you.

In Tokyo stayed at House of Ikebukuro. Also very clean. There is a computer inside the room, no charge to use. Other places you need to pay 100 for 10-15 mins. It also has a microwave, fridge and toaster. Mrs Chen provide aa freah loaf of bread everyday

We also stayed at Hotel Parkside in Ueno. It is close to Ueno Park and Zoo.But beware of the back alley. It has a couple of x-rated store, but generally very safe.

For 9 nights of accomodation we spent about CAD$2100.
You must visit Ghibli Museum =Pokemon Centre in Tokyo and Open-air Museum in Hakone. My kids love those 3 places.
