Take Taxi in Kyoto during early April 2008/3/31 13:55
Hi,
I plan to visit Kyoto for various World Heritage places during 5-7 April) and heard that during Cherry blossom season, it is very jam-packed in Kyoto. One can face very long queue at the bus stop. Would be advisable to take taxi in Kyoto instead for a better time management? We are a group of 4 (Expense wise, it should be rather economical to share taxi costs).
Appreciate if anyone could suggest.

taxi in kyoto 2008/3/31 17:55
Yes, as long as you either speak Japanese or have all the destinations written in Japanese on a piece of paper. a taxi may not be necessarily cheaper as they will be stuck in the traffic at rush hour plus 4 passengers may be too much for one cab. In some countries cabs aren't allowed to have a passenger in front for safety reasons (the driver safety). how is it in Japan??

Taxis are not too difficult to use in Japan. You will usually be ok if you can say the name of the place you want to go to. Small taxis seat 2-3 in the back and one up front. Large taxis can definitely seat 3 in the back and one up front. Some taxis can carry 5 passengers if they have a bench seat up front.

Be aware that in Kyoto taxis will be stuck in the same traffic as buses. If you are worried about time management consider taking the trains and subways and then a taxi or walking the rest of the way.

Taxi 2008/4/1 11:13
We spend 2 days in Kyoto. We took taxi to all the attractions. We had a couple of drivers who knows how to weave around back alleys to avoid traffic jam which saved us alot of money.
The taxis either hold 4 or 5 passengers. Try to take those that hold 4 as the starting fare and cost for every 500 meters are lower.
