Best, least expensive Kobe to Kumamoto

Staying in Kobe for 2 weeks and need to send a 12-year old daughter from Kobe to Kumamoto to stay with friends. Can kids travel alone? If not, what is best way to get her there & back? Any ideas?

Though not the least expensive method, I recommend taking your daughter to Itami Airport where she can take a direct flight to Kumamoto. (and ask her friend to pick her up at the airport)
You can take Shinkansen from Shin-Kobe to Hakata and switch to JR Limited Express Ariake to Kumamoto (4hrs 30 min) but considering her age, I think that air travel is the safest.
