I will be travelling in Japan between April 24-May 6. Should I plan to be in Tokyo and Kyoto during Golden week, so that I can avoid the crowds and ghigh prices? Or does it not really matter that much? thank you!

Kyoto will be crowded, especially between May 3 and 6, but prices barely differ from the rest of the year. Tokyo is not crowded and there are no price increases. I recommend to avoid traveling on May 3 (especially out of Tokyo) and on May 6 (especially back into Tokyo). Some more details: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2282.html

Nara is a quick trip from Kyoto, better to see it whilst there rather than backtracking.
