From Takayama to Nikko?

Is it possible to get to Nikko from Takayama without going through Tokyo? Bus perhaps? Are there any tours that you know of?

If you travel by car, you can do it along a very beautiful route via Okunikko, Numata and Matsumoto.
If you tarvel by public transportation, the fastest way is via Omiya Station (just north of Tokyo), but you could also take slower trains through Gunma: Nikko - Oyama - (Ryomo Line) - Takasaki - Nagano - Matsumoto - Takayama
