When did Japan become a country?

Good Question! 2004/5/5 10:31
It depends on the definition of "country".

People have lived in current Japan for more then 10,000 years.

A considerable part of today's Japan was for the first time unified about 1,500 years ago. It was called Yamato and organized around the emperor. Personally, I would call this the time, when Japan became a "country".

Then, Japan broke into many small countries again, and was re-united again by Nobunaga/Hideyoshi/Ieyasu around the year 1600.

From around 1868. the feudal structures of Edo Period Japan were replaced by that of a Western style nation state.

In 1891, Japan got its first Western style constitution.

So, depending on your definition of country, it can be 2000 years ago or only 113 years ago.

The answer is No.
Juji's view is a generally-accepted explanation for historical origins of Japan.

The first mention of Japan is considered to be in the Chinese Epic "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" (about the 3rd century AD) in which a Chinese expidition of one of the kingdoms goes to an island in the east called "Wa" (generally thought to be Kyushu). The culture they find there is primitave by their standards, but it consists of quite a few nations, to one of which the Chinese establish fomal diplomatic ties.

So it certainly isn't started by China (in a historical sense anyway). Most people think that the Japanese (except the Ainu) are originally of the same genetic stock as the Chinese, crossing to Japan tens of thousands of years ago. But that's prehistory and is very much open to debate.
