How do you say Oomori in English? 2008/6/23 19:51
I checked at yahoo online dictionary for the word ''oomori'', and it says ''large helping''.
But how do your use that in a sentense?
And is there any other word meaning the same?

If anybody knows, please help me! Thanks.

If you are at a restaurant and you want extra rice with your tempura for example, you would ask for "Oomori de", and you will receive a larger plate of rice than usual- that's what is meant by "large helping".

Hi Shu, thanks for your answer, but I wanted to know how to use "large helping" in English. I also wanted to know if there is any other word in English for Oomori.

I'm sorry if the way I asked was confusing.
I appreciate your comment.

You can try:
Can I have a larger helping?
or alternatively:
Can I have a larger helping of salad?

Other options I can think of would be using the word "extra".
Can I get extra tomatoes?

Or using the word "more"
Can I get more rice?

I hope this helps.

large helping of, extra ____ 2008/6/25 07:48
I agree- oomori pretty much only translates as "large helping", or "extra____" but it's not commonly one of the options at restaurants in my country (Australia) like it is in Japan. The servings are so much bigger in Australia anyway that I can hardly imagine anyone wanting extra
(^^;)

Oomori can be used in Enlish as "large size".

Conversely, nami would be used like "regular size".

For example, if you were to go to Yoshinoya in the US you could order a regular size (nami) gyudon or a large size (oomori) gyudon.
