Buying A New DSLR? 2008/8/2 04:32
I will in Tokyo in october for around 4-5 weeks.I was wondering, would it be worth buying a camera whilst im over there?

Im looking to upgrade from my compact to a DSLR and was thinking about buying a nice entry level one such as the Pentax K100D, Sony Alpha A200,Olympus E-420,Canon EOS400D etc al of which retail in the UK for around 」300-」400.

Is it possible to pick one up over there cheaper?

Is it ok to haggle?

Does anyone know of any good second hand camera shops in Tokyo where i could grab a bargain?

Do a search for "DSLR" in this forum and you'll find many similar questions and plenty of good answers.

Most of the models you've mentioned are old models, except for the Olympus E-420. It would be helpful if you quoted prices in the UK, in Japanese yen, so everyone gets the same point of reference.

Anyway, 300-400 GBP is about 64,000-85,000 yen.

You may not need to buy second hand, as the prices are much cheaper than the UK.
I've seen the Pentax K100D with 18-55mm lens for 31,800 yen, but that is a runout price which will be gone by October.

An Olympus E-420 with lens can be found for 52,000-55,000yen.
However, the E-420 is a small upgrade from the E-410 (same with the E-520 & E-510, which have optical stabilising), so it is more cost effective to get the E-510 (can be found for about 51,000yen, with lens.), or the E-410 for 42,000yen with lens.

Another advantage of buying Olympus, is that unlike all the other brands, Olympus has a world wide warranty on all of its digital cameras!!

Here:

The price for E410 has gone up, but E510 has gone down.
The E510 is a bargain at 49,990yen.

Thanks for the link.
E510 looks like a no brainer really.
Are these prices for body only or does the price include a kit lens?
Are they all new?(so im not getting confused with second-hand prices)

You seem to know your stuff, could you recomend an area/shops to buy from?

Tommy,

The prices Sandy quotes are the cheapest prices listed on kakaku.com for brand-new lens kits. However, you should treat these prices like the discount air ticket prices advertised in travel agent windows - as there is a high possibility that the prices/models are mysteriously no longer available when you actually step foot in the store. Unless you have time to go trudging all over Tokyo from store to store, I would recommend going to one of the discount electronic chains (Bic Camera, Sakuraya, Yodobashi etc.), whe you will still get a reasonable price.

If you click on the three entries for E510, you can see that one is body only, one lens kit & two lens kit. Look below, and you will see a number of prices and shops. The ones with 東京 are in Tokyo. Select a shop, and look at the line under the phone numbers.
e.g. 東京都千代田区神田須田町2-7-3
Paste this into google and click map. PC Bomber, Outlet Plaza, Wink are around the Akihabara area.

The E410 & E510 are no longer available to BicCamera, Yodobashi or SofMap, but will be available for a couple more months in these smaller shops.

Your fallback would be an E420 or E520. You can, as Dave said, go to the big three shops to get these, but expect to pay 10,000 - 15,000yen more for these.
e.g. E420 66,400 vs 55,000 or E520 79,800 vs 64,000yen.
