I made some research and I found that kakeru has different meanings like writing, bet (on), lack (of something), hangings (?), on, etc. It all depends on the kanji that is used to write the word.
I hope this has helped you somehow ;)

Inochi Kakeru means that ' do at the risk of (losing) one's life '
I (Japanese) cannot use this word lightly.

"Inochi (wo) kakeru" means "to pledge (my) life". This phrase is a bit too theatrical but a related na-adjective "inochigake" is frequently used meaning "very serious".
