Happy Puppy,
how long can I stay the longest in Japan as a visitor from the USA
90 days.
my grandpapa was a citizen of Japan, does that account for anything
Don't think so.

If you were to find work in Japan and get a working visa, then you would also be able to stay "for ever". Your original question was about staying as a temporary visitor (i.e. tourist), though, which is different.

US citizens can visit Japan without a visa for 90 days. After that, you can leave and reenter Japan for another 90 days.
As a grandchild of a Japanese citizen, you could possibly qualify for a Long Term Resident visa, which allows you to stay for 1 or 3 years; however, as the name implies, it's not a 'visitor' visa.
is it becuz USA is more lenient than the USA
Hmm, that's a good question.

Japanese people who move to the States have to get working visas just like people who move to Japan do. To get the visas they have to fulfill certain criteria. I don't think that the US is more lenient than Japan- they certainly don't give visas to everyone who applies!

as a neighbour to the USA and a frequent visitor there, I can assure the OP that the US government watch carefully who come in, especially by plane.

I believe in order to get a long term resident visa you'll need to have a guarantor and you'll need to prove that you are your grandfather blood.
You can do this by seeing if you are in your grandfather's family register (Koseki). This will no doubt make it a lot easier for you.
Good luck.
