I consider myself?

I have to write a letter for a potential homestay in Japan.　I don't need help with writing the letter but want to know how I would say something like Although I live in New Zealand I was born in Britain so I consider myself British.

私はニュージーランドに住んでいるのにイギリスに生まれました。だから、私はイギリス人だと思います。

Is that sentence ok? Does the Igirisu jin part sounds a bit funny?

It sounds just a bit strange... as if you are arguing your nationality to the authorities on the basis of your birthplace rather than how you "feel" :) And you might want to make a clearer contrast between "where I live" and "where I was born."

私が住んでいるのはニュージーランドですが、生まれたのはイギリスです。だから、自分のことはイギリス人だと思っています。

Or for the second sentence, you could rephrase to say:
自分はイギリス人に近いと思っています。(I feel I'm closer to British.)
自分の根はイギリスだと思っています。(I believe my roots are in UK.)
イギリスと深いつながりを感じます。(I feel deep connection with UK.)
