Chiisai = Small
Chiisana = A small (insert noun)
Ookii = Big
Ookina = Big (insert noun)

ookina/chiisana can only be used to modify a noun.
ookii ringo
ookina ringo
Both are correct.
kono ringo wa ookii
*kono ringo wa ookina
The latter is wrong.
