Vegetarian food at Ryokan in Hakone? 2008/9/18 05:00
I will be in Hakone on 3rd Jan 2008. I want to stay at Ryokan that has a private onsen. Are there any that serve vegetarian food? I am willing to forgo the private onsen. Many thanks for your help in advance.

It can be a challenge as many Japanese foods use stock make from bonito flakes. But they might be able to make a change for you by using konbu stock instead. You should call the Ryokan you will be staying and see what they can do for you.

I would recommend booking your ryokan through a reliable agency who can communicate your dietary restrictions to them (unless you can speak Japanese). www.japaneseguesthouses.com can do that, and probably other sites like japanhotel.net or japanican. I think it would be best way to make sure that you have communicated what you need.
