What happens to the prayer plaques?

What happens to the prayer plaques?

I noticed that individuals would hang their prayers or wishes on a wooden plaque at either the temple or shrine. What happens to them after a while? Are they destroyed?

Typically, they are collected once a year and burned sacredly. Here is a set of photographs I found from a very quick internet search.
