Timing on gift giving

My first trip to Japan and meeting some Japanese friends that I have known since the 80s when they lived in the US.I will see them several times while in Japan and I am bring them a gift. When is the correct timing on giving it to them. When we 1st meet or during the visit sometime?

You should give them the gift at your first meeting. They won't open it in front of you unless you tell them to do so.
