Do you mean mochi? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MochiIt is made of pounded glutenous rice formed into balls. Some people fill it with sweet red bean paste. Making it requires a large mortar and pestle, a mochi machine, or even a bread machine. Lacking any of that you can make dango, which is similar to mochi, by steaming dough made from mochiko (glutenous rice flour).
I also like to make chichi mochi, which is again made from mochiko, except that it is usually baked. I think its popular in hawaii, and many english recipes can be found on the internet.
