Any information about Mawara-Nyo deity? 2008/12/17 04:09
I was very impressed by the statue of Mawara-Nyo at Sanjsangend in Kyoto. I 'ld like to know more information about it but I have found only one very short record in WEB the same as I've read in guide book.

Let me introduce some account on wikipedia's Japanese edition.

Although there are no unique topic of Mawara-Nyo on wikipedia,
there is a collective topic of the "28 deities"(NijyuHachi-bu-shu).

It says their name and appearance is based on a translated buddhist scripture.
ω@VO is the name,
but I can neither read or take its precise meaning.

This is a translation from@Sanskrit to Chinese,
and according to wikipedia's description,
unfortunately it is not a accurate translation,
and even the number of 28 deities has no corresponding original source.
And moreover, it says that this translated scripture
lose its currency in China or other buddhist scene
and is only remembered in Japan.

From this description, this Mawara-Nyo doesn't seem to be
an unique deity with unique legends, but one of collective deities,
and is born and developed its image while getting through
buddhist translators, monks, and sculptors.

However, I don't think this means its out of random fantasy,
but is actually basing on the collective unconsciousness of those monks and sculptors.
