food budget 2009/1/18 06:12
will it be reasonable to have a average food budget of 3000 per day?

I assume that you ask this question in the context of a trip to Japan (as opposed to living in Japan).

3000 yen per yen and day sounds like a reasonable food budget. You will have to select meals very cost consciously, though: convenience stores, fast food restaurants, lunch boxes, etc.

I'll be in Japan for 5 weeks. I thought of 3000 but it might be 4000 too.
I know that in some cases like Takayama i might spend much more.. they told me you can't complete a trip in Japan without Hida-beef.. (-:

Depends on the traveler. For someone who lives in Japan 3000yen is more then enough.
If you wish to save money then do as locals do, eat locally and not expensive restaurants. Cheap noodle shops, curry, sandwiches can be found in many places. Allows you to save money some days and then splurge when you need to.

How does the current world crysis effect Japan?

Does prices are going down?
by Doron rate this post as useful

Same prices 2009/1/19 09:11
No, not noticeably. Some imported goods are cheaper because of the current strength of the yen, but I haven't seen any drop in prices compared to last year yet.

Petrol/gas is obviously cheaper now than 6 months ago.

Don't forget about the exchange rate. 3000 yen today is about US$33. When I was there in 07, it was about US$25 thanks to the much more favorable rate.

yep..i'm worried 2009/1/21 16:30
a bit about the Yen...

I still have to buy the JRP.. it's about 640$ and with commissions in my country it can get to 700$.
(somehow they have double-commissions)

Does anyone estimate that the dollar might get stronger with Obama enterance?

The exchange-rate (US$-Yen) is more or less the same as it was yesterday.

Still, as other readers already pointed out, it's doable living on 3000Yen a day.

You just need to find some cheap ramen & sushi-places, buy bentoboxes and visit MOS-burger once in a while - and its absolutely possible.

I recommend 105yen per plate sushi restaurants. I love this food. For about 1000yen (usual one plate is 2 sushi) You can eat a lot and really good food....oh I miss this.

two nights ago, and it was so cool!

I ended with 9 plates..like 1000.

3000 yen is plenty 2009/4/6 19:53
When I was there a year ago I ate lot's of good food that didn't even reach 1000yen and in perfectly acceptable quantities. Of course once in a while you may want something more "special" and that can cost considerably more.

On average I would say that 3000 yen per day is acceptable but I would bump it a little bit, to allow for some special meals here and there.

so it was ok 2009/4/22 02:55
I manage to spend about 2000-3000 yen per day.

Sometime i did spend more.. like in Fukouka when i tried the yatai or when i went to Izakaya places.

Doesnt matter how much i eat, and i eat bento boxes, instant noodles, salad packs, noodles shops or junk food - i still lost some weight.. about 3-4 kgs in 4 weeks. I did some hiking at Kyushu and I walking around a lot.

Japan is nice and i hope to be able to go again in the future. currently at Tokyo, my last week.. looking for souvineers and gadgets to myslef.. thought about the PSP thingy..
